I am calling because Michael Tyson died of coronavirus while jailed on Rikers on a parole violation. His death and others like it could have been avoided if  your office had not been actively opposing the release of people jailed on parole or serving city sentences. I respectfully request that your office publicly support the release of EVERYONE currently jailed in Rikers and city jails, direct your line district attorneys to request that people be released on their own recognizance, and to publicly support courts’ decisions to end jail sentences.

You are located in the current U.S. epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, a deadly virus that has killed over 2,000 people in the U.S. So far New York and New Jersey currently have the highest cases of COVID-19 in the country. Your detention conditions make it impossible to follow social distance protocols, as medical experts recommend and political officials are enforcing. Your transfers put people at further risk of contracting the deadly virus. [INSERT NAME OF ICE FIELD OFFICE DIRECTOR] needs to act now to ensure the safety and well-being of people detained by immediately releasing all people held by ICE in all (New York OR New Jersey) detention centers, stop further arrests and end all transfers between your negligent centers.
